The Carterton Railway Museum was formed in 1990 by the Wairarapa Railway Restoration Society Inc. to preserve Carterton's Historic Railway Station from demolition by the then Government owned New Zealand Rail Ltd.

The Society won the 2007 Rail Heritage Trust Restoration Award for the Historic Railway Station which was built in 1880 of native New Zealand timbers. This Vogel style station is still used daily by commuters to and from the Wellington area.

The Museum houses a collection of railway memorabilia including operating Tablet Machines, photographs, along with interactive displays and visual media.

An Archive & Research Centre on NZ Railway history and its staff is situated within the Museum. We continue to seek information on NZ Railways history and its staff including photographs and any documentation. Are you able to help? Please contact the society.

The Station precinct retains its rural setting with unique features and heritage wagons. The Society's workshop undertakes all types of restoration for display within the museum and precinct including a railway motor trolley.

The Society owns its own 20 ton shunting locomotive number TR 724, built in 1960 by AG Price in Thames NZ.

Open Every Sunday
11am - 4pm. Other times on request.
Admission fee applies.
