Journey through Wairarapa's Heritage Discover the heritage of rural New Zealand in the Wairarapa region, nestled between the rugged Tararua range to the west and the wild Pacific Ocean to the east. Only an hour from Wellington, Wairarapa's many attractive small museums and heritage attractions are within easy reach. Don't forget to explore the Heritage Trails of Wairarapa along State Highway 2 and in the country towns from Featherston to Mt Bruce 20 kilometres north of Masterton. be delighted by the diversity of small museums from the mounted displays at the Kahutara Taxidermy Gallery to the Martinborough Museum, Carterton Historical Society or the 1880 Carterton Rail Museum exhibits. Recapture the innocence of the youth of yesterday at the Museum of Childhood or view a unique display of china at Meakin @ Woodland. Transport yourself to the Fell Engine Museum which used to climb the Rimutaka ranges and view the advent of the motor car at the Pointon Collection or visit the Featherston heritage Complex. At the Mainly Military Museum you can view tanks to toys. Another place of interest is the vehicle display at Gasoline Heaven. For information on cemetery records you can contact the Taphophile group at Clareville. Visit the yesteryear garden displays and buildings at either Kahikatea Gardens or Daysh House. While in Masterton visit Aratoi Wairarapa Museum of Art and history. Agriculture has long been a mainstay of the region. You can relive the past at Mount Bruce Pioneer Museum and trace Wairarapa's farming history at the Shears History Museum. Country heritage also abounds at Tinui Craft Corner & Museum enroute to the east coast and Cobblestones Early Settlers Museum in Greytown. Vintage machinery displays can also be arranged.
